Compression at Strike‐Slip Fault Is a Favorable Condition for Subduction Initiation

چکیده
The recent statistics suggests that over 60% of active Cenozoic subduction initiation (SI) cases are related to the strike-slip fault. A number previous studies have shown lithospheric weak zone is a necessary condition for SI. However, direct effect motion on weakening and SI has rarely been investigated in numerical models due challenge complex 3D boundary conditions. In this study, new model built with both compression results indicate at provides favorable SI, producing maintaining lithospheric-scale facilitates strain localization addition, high velocity buoyant overriding plate contributes young oceanic plate. This mechanism satisfies large natural Cenozoic.

Dynamics of subduction initiation at preexisting fault zones
We show that a new subduction zone can initiate at a preexisting dipping fault zone with reasonable plate forces, consistent with what is observed in the western Pacific. The dynamics of subduction initiation within a viscoelastic medium has been systematically explored with the finite element method. We investigate the compression of oceanic lithosphere with hoth force and velocity boundary co...
متن کاملSubduction initiation at relic arcs
Although plate tectonics is well established, how a new subduction zone initiates remains controversial. Based on plate reconstruction and recent ocean drilling within the Izu-Bonin-Mariana, we advance a new geodynamic model of subduction initiation (SI). We argue that the close juxtaposition of the nascent plate boundary with relic oceanic arcs is a key factor localizing initiation of this new...
متن کاملAssessment of Critical Condition for Rill Initiation on Degraded Hillslope
Generally, the evaluation and assessment critical condition of rill formation are useful for a better understanding of soil erosion processes. The inherence characteristics of soils, which have much dynamic variations on the hill-slopes and are affected by rill formation, are the soil critical shear stress and soil erodibility factors. This study aims to assess experimental rill incision thre...
متن کاملSubduction initiation: spontaneous and induced
The sinking of lithosphere at subduction zones couples Earth’s exterior with its interior, spawns continental crust and powers a tectonic regime that is unique to our planet. In spite of its importance, it is unclear how subduction is initiated. Two general mechanisms are recognized: induced and spontaneous nucleation of subduction zones. Induced nucleation (INSZ) responds to continuing plate c...
متن کاملA tensile, flexural model for the initiation of subduction
S U M M A R Y We argue that subduction may be initiated at passive continental margins without shortening the lithosphere. Overcoming the lithosphere’s high compressive strength requires special circumstances, and these make it difficult to explain the nearly complete recycling of old sea-floor. Instead, we present a model that predicts tensile decoupling of the continental and oceanic lithosph...
